Work Introduction

Soil is both a natural deposit and a vessel of culture and history. Its colors, textures, and names record the temporality of geological transformation while carrying traces of human activity, memory, and local knowledge. This work extends the outcomes of the “Soil Research” project by selecting eighteen kinds of soil from Hsinchu, each fired into ceramic sheets and suspended in space. When touched by the wind, they collide and create sounds that arise by chance, as if the land itself were whispering in response.

These soils are no longer static geological signs but are translated into a visual spectrum and a sonic resonance. Soil is not merely material; it becomes the sound of time. The winds of Hsinchu set the ceramics into motion, just as events awaken memory. The sounds are fleeting and contingent, yet they reveal the instability and fluidity of reality. Through the translation of material into color and sound, the work transforms soil from matter into sensory experience. The eighteen soils are not only fragments of strata but also overlapping spectra of color and sound, unfolding a layered sense of flow. Within the space, viewers can not only see differences in color but also hear the resonance of the land.

This raises a question: does reality exist as a fixed entity, or only as an echo that is constantly generated, vanishing, and returning? Through the interplay of wind, soil, and sound, the work turns existence into a flowing perception, reminding us that reality has never been still. It is always in flux.
